    hammock camping with a dog

We got a new puppy from a local rescue during July.
    Bailey 2.jpg

We have not been camping yet with her. Does anyone have any tips for hammock camping with dogs?

**I do not plan on putting her in a hammock** I am just trying to figure out any tips or advice of how to secure her in the site while car camping

before my fallout with the x, i would tie a rope across the ground to the same trees i was utilizing for my hammock. slip the leash handle over the rope before you connect it to second tree and you have a makeshift dogrun. tangling becomes a problem with a tarp, but theres nothing to be done about it; the dog has to be tie up all night, you don't wanna risk loosing her.

Buddy sleep on his pad beside my hammock. I bring a retractable leash with a biner on the handle to clip on the tarp ridge line at night, my line goes under the tarp. It allows him to move around but doesn't tangle up. For day use I'll run a line over head high and clip him to that if we're at a campground where he has to be leashed.

@TallPaul you just get a pooch as well?

so basically I just spread the guylines out as far as I can so she doesn't tangle up in them?

what do you do for the dog to sleep on? something to keep them warm if the temp drop?

We are hoping to get out as well. at least a family (including dog) hang and perhaps I can get a mini overnight bike tour on the new river trail in VA. (that would be without the dog though)

Last year we got a rescue Akita that I have taken out on the trail a couple times. For sleeping it depends on the dog. Ours does not like any sort of dog bed at home and on the trial is completely content to lay down wherever the mood suits her for the night. I have taken one of our 4 season leg pads for her but she just finds a spot in the dirt to curl up. I do take a long length of Dynaglide with loops spliced in both ends that I can rig as a line from tree to tree or just anchor to one tree. I have a carabiner on her leash all the time so that while hiking I can clip her to my pack or up to a tree if I need my hands free. Some dogs don't need to be secured all the time but Akita's are hunting dogs and she has a very strong drive to chase, one deer across the trail and she would run it down into the next state. Just on walks around the neighborhood she has pulled me down the street so I am cautious with her in the woods. Consider the breed and how they behave into account for how you prep camp....training is huge in this but some breeds still have strong instincts.

Ours sleeps in her crate below my hammock when we car camp. When we backpack, she has a little fleece bag with a pillow bottom, and a fleece jacket and is leashed to the tree next to me. Occasionally she'll come into the hammock with me, but she's 25# so doesn't take a bunch of space. If we're backpacking, she has a Ruffwear pack and carries her own stuff.

this was before we were hammock campers and she would sleep in my daughter's tent.
