My 60lb Deutsch Drahthaar sleeps in the 'mock with me. She has been trained that while in the hammock it is quiet time, so she settles right down and goes to sleep. Since she sleeps in the 'mock, no need for extra insulation. In fact, she is a self propelled portable heater! When car camping I sometimes string up a line with the leash on it as a run. At night, a leash attached to a tree.

    Love the pics people shared!!

Well Kaje has a tent and a gear hammock of his own. You see how well this works.... My boy loves to sleep with me.

Have you had a vet check her hips? This troubles me.

So has anyone attempted to make a dog hammock? Sounds like a fun DIY project!

Depending on the size of your dog a gear hammock should work. I've never made one but I know others have; it would be a simple project to do.

Contact Simply light designs Jared makes a gear hammock should be able to do a dog hammock. Next time out I'll give mine a try with a 25lb Wheaten. Did the hammock but she likes to spread out unless cold tends to overheat.

Here's a link to one I made 6 years ago (previous dog). It's insulated because he didn't have a very warm coat.

My dog is around 25lb and I'm ok with her sleeping in the hammock with me. We've gone out twice and both times she spent half the night and in the hammock and half out. I'm good with that, but what bothers me is tracking all the dirt into the hammock. Don't have a good solution for that yet. Any tips other than banning her from the hammock?
Crayons - they might look different, but they all taste the same

Probably not the information you were looking for, and already covered, but make sure your pup is current on all its shots. That is usually my biggest fear with my dogs in the woods.

my pup goes with me all the time. I've found that she does better with her own pack, the little bit of extra weight seems to help her calm down a bit and enjoy the hike a bit. She goes crazy when I get her pack out because she knows we are headed out. I also have a thin 10' braded cable that I bring to tie her up to one of the tree's I hang from during the night. She does carry all her own stuff, including a small sports bottle of water with a good cap that closes. Keep an eye on your pup, they will get overheated easily when it's hot and they don't seem to know to ask for a drink ;-) you can also use a good biner to clip her to your belt when hiking for a hands free way for the two of you to hike (GREAT on the uphills!) and then when in camp I use that for her cable.

Just be sure to get her used to all her stuff at home.

OH and don't be surprised if she tends to talk to all the wildlife when you are trying to sleep. Even my kids have learned the phrase "Good girl, now go back to sleep"
