I had two different lengths of the 1.25mm Zline break the first time I used it on my tarp for the ridgeline (was using it with dutch bling)....and I didn't think I was tensioning it too tight at all (certainly no where near it's 200 pound rating).

I replaced the Zline with Zing-It for my ridgeline, and left the Zline on the guylines to see if it lasts there or not (I know the ridgeline is under a lot more stress than the guylines are). YMMV.

Dutch bling is not supposed to be used with Z-Line Spectra cord which is likely why you saw a break well under its tensile strength.

I use 1.25mm Z-Line for my guy lines and ridge line and have had zero problems with it. But I also use figure 9's or just simple bowline knots to take out my tarp and tension it.

I should have read the website. It says the 1.25mm cordage is used on their shelters for guy lines.

I'm pretty certain that the tensile strength is fine for tarps and guy lines (need more data) .

I was wondering if anybody has had success with utilizing this thin line to make either whoopies or UCR's specifically for guy outs.

I'll be using a superfly tarp and I'm hazarding a guess that the tarp material will yield before the spectra cord will.

Anybody got data on this one?

Amazingly, the cord broke both times in areas that never even touched the dutch bling (once on the wrap around the tree, and once between the dutch bling and the tree). Maybe the sheath was compromised - I have no clue. It didn't break as I was tensioning the ridgeline, it broke when I was putting in the stakes for the tarp (and tightening those guylines).

I wouldn't use the thin stuff where there will be any sort of abrasive action that could be attributed to its failure. Especially on tree bark as certain species are very aggressive.

Perhaps you were just extremely unlucky and got the one batch that evaded Quality Control.

Z line is a spectra core line with a woven dacron sheath around it to protect the spectra. As such, you can't splice it or make it into whoopies or UCR's since it is not a hollow braid like amsteel or zing it.

When putting together my ultralite backpacking setup, I used the 1.8 mm dynaGlide for for my tarp ridgeline, tarp guy lines, and whoopie suspension. While it may be a touch of overkill for the guylines, I have been surprising impressed with the whoopies! Not nearly as heavy as amsteel, and way more compactable.

So it looks like i'll have to go the 1.5 dyneema route for UCR's. The alternative is what i'm using now. Adjustable grip hitch at the tarp end and or stake end. Whilst the adjustable grip hitch is one of the more agressive grippers I would prefer ucr guy outs. Endless decisions.
