    Hanging tarp seperate from hammock

Ok, I finally got to setup my new(used) Explorer Ul today. I attempted to rig the tarp separate from the hammock, but it was kind of a funky setup. I used the Warbonnett tree straps with a carabiner around the tree. I hooked the stock tarp line to these carabiners once my hammock was hung. Kinda backwards in the setup process, I know.

My question is: How do some of you rig your tarp so that it can be setup before the hammock in case of rain?

    Thanks,

    Scott

My usual routine (weather cooperating) is pitch my hammock first. If conditions are rainy, then the tarp will go up first.

I have Speer No-Tangle guylines and ridgeline connections on my MacCat Deluxe. I just tie the tarp ridgeline cord to the trees, usually about my head height using a slip knot. The sides of the tarp then get guyed out.

In easy weather conditions, the tarp may be strung a bit higher with the sides staked further out (more like an awning). For windy/stormy/cold conditions, the height of the tarp tieout is likely be lower than my hammock strap connections at the tree (depends on tree separation) and the sides are pitched at a steeper angle (more like an A-frame tent).

I bought a bigger tarp to give me more room for lounging, cooking and gear cover which makes for a dry hammock/camp set-up when it is raining. I use the stock tarp as an undercover (http://www.tothewoods.net/ImagesStay...flyProject.pdf) and have found it very helpful as the temps drop. The only difference is that I have the zipper mod (Thanks 2Q/ZQ) and I don't have to worry about closing up the foot end after slipping through the bottom entry.

I keep my tarp separate in a mesh stuff sack and use para cord and figure 9's to attach it to the tree/supports. Normally I pull out the first side, give it a quick eye ball and run the cord around the tree and anchor to the fig 9, pull out the rest of the tarp and repeat the attachment on the other side. Once its up I take a second look and adjust left or right as needed. Usually goes up nice and easy and only takes the one re-adjustment.

I really like the figure nine for anchors. Thanks again.

    Why bother?

I use snakeskins for the hammock/tarp/UC combo, and never bother to set up the tarp separately. With the hammock rolled up nicely in the tarp in the skins it never gets wet, even during setup.

IMHO, the great advantage of the stock fly attached to the ridgeline is the ease and speed of setup. Just tie out the two sides and you're done.

For me, the main advantage of pitching the tarp separately is the tauter pitch, but if a bit of a floppy pitch doesn't bother you...
