GoatBone DIY Ultralight Bug Net (RSBTR 0.5 oz NS50 Noseeum mesh)

This is my first DIY post. I am an ultralight hiker so all of my projects focus on reducing weight without giving up comfort or safety. My gf and I come up with the ideas and she does all of the sewing

We made an ultralight bug net that stows in a bishop bag and hangs on the foot end whoopie sling. I wanted the bug net to be easily stowed so I can set my hammock up without the bug net being in the way. I also like sleeping without a bug net as much as possible, but I wanted it to be easily deployed if bugs become a problem. The little yellow mason line loop attached to the bug net is so I can quickly identify the head end of the bug net. Even if you are not an ultralight hiker, this is still a cool way to store your bug net

This is a fronkey style bug net inspired by fireinmybones mods.

    Stow - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3UmASyRBvU0

These are some of the ways we cut weight:
    - NS50 bug net from RSBTR
    - "Tiny" .02 oz cord locks from zpacks
    - 1/16 in shock cord from zpacks
    - sliding knot made from mason line instead of cord lock on bishop bag ends (learned from 'camping with hammocks' on youtube)

    Here is the weight info:

    Ultralight DIY bug net

Bug net is made with 0.5 oz NS50 Noseeum mesh from ripstopbytheroll.com

Bug Net Bishop Bag: 4.8 grams (.17 oz)
Bug Net: 69.9 grams (2.5 oz)

    Ultralight DIY Hammock

Hammock is made with 1.1 oz Ripstop nylon from ripstopbytheroll.com

    Hammock Length: 9 foot
    Ridge Line Length: 90 inches
    Hammock Width: 58 inches

Total set up weight (hammock stuff sack, hammock, ridge line, whoopie slings, bug net bishop bag, bug net): 291.2 grams (10.3 oz)

Tree strap weight varies by length; I have 5 foot, 6 foot and 9 foot straps made of 1 inch nylon straps from ArrowheadEquipment.com

That is pretty slick. I like how the opening is situated more towards the end making it easier to slide on over your UQ. Very clever design.

Nice design- do you find it bothersome to have the shock cord across your backside ?

The shock cord stays to the bottom of the hammock almost exactly like a fronkey style net. Sleeping for a second time in it tonight, I'll see how if goes

I have used a cord the same as that on a hug net: no problem at all with it.

Hmm, very interesting. I had made a Fronkey style net but was thinking about trying another design, preferably ultralight, that would allow stowage along a ridgeline -- this may be it.

So are the fireinmybones mods available here? Did you do anything different? Care to share your plans or a basic description?

The FireInMyBones mod is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q4kr...dTHkt&index=10

We followed fireinmybones video almost exactly except that we did not sew the head end of the bug net together. instead we made end of the bug net simply cinch down around the ball of the hammock. then i ran shock cord around the bottom channel of the bug net and tied it together. by not sewing the head end together it makes it really easy to stow. when i lay down in the hammock it seems to completely seal around my back. the bishop bag was made by a 13x10 inch piece of silnylon. finished size of the bishop bag was 6 inch diameter by about 8 inches long after the channels were sewn. apologies, i did not take pictures as we were making it, but i tried to include some detail in the videos.
