    Difference between Amsteel and Zing-it?

What are the differences and where are the two used, differently?

Reason I ask, its that I am getting ready to order the whoopee slings but then wondered if I am suppose to use Amsteel for both structural ridgeline and the tarp or bug net line. I have a ton of cord, so if I can use it for applications that I don't need Amsteel, I will.

Amsteel is much stronger. Use it when you are supporting body weight, such as in hammock suspension. Zing it or lash it can be used for most other applications, such as hammock ridgeline, tarp ridgeline, tarp tire outs, etc.

Amsteel 7/64" has a 1600 lb. breaking strength. Zing-it 1.75 mm has a 500 lb. breaking strength (depending on which website you visit). Obviously, Zing-It is not meant for a hammock suspension; the reason it's popular for hammock/tarp ridgelines and tie-outs is because it is spliceable. It has no stretch and doesn't hold water.

If the "ton of cord" you have is nylon, it has no place in a hammock setup.

It probably is nylon, from the Army surplus store. Can you I just it to hang bear cans or something? Maybe it will stretch to much. Now wondering if I was a little too excited about that wad of cord, for $10

You just don't want to use the nylon for weight-bearing, or tarp bearing applications because it stretches when wet (though I do hang my group tarp via nylon because it's not keeping anything dry). Nylon rope also wicks water like crazy.

I guess I do not understand the advantage of Zing-it, over Amsteel. It looks like about the same price. I think they both an be spliced. Amsteel is much stronger.

    Thoughts.....?

Zingit is much thinner and lighter. It packs smaller as well.

Ok, now that clears up why I'd pick it over Amsteel for non-suspension use.
    Thanks!

It's not recommended to hang a bear cannister. Instead, place it away from your sleeping area in a spot where a bear hopefully can't roll it over a cliff or into a river.
