Backpacking with youth groups in Kentucky and Arkansas ... spiders. They come out at night.
Soaked 25' of jute twine in Permethrin. The idea is to create an 8 foot bug free zone.
It weighs 2 ounces.

This sounds like the 'lariat rope around your bedroll camp- to keepout snakes/ scorpions' concept. Let us know how that works out.?
It wouldn't stop the mozzies, but it will be interesting to hear how it does to stop the crawling bugs.
I totally forgot that Permethrin kills scorpions and spiders. I'll have to remember this for my Arizona camping trips. I wonder if it would kill a tarantula? I found one of those crawling around the campsite last trip.

Quickly touching permethrin may not necessarily kill an insect. Permethrin is a neurotoxin. As it was explained to me (in a greatly oversimplified way, I'm sure), part of the way it works to prevent bugs from biting is that it scrambles their brains so much, that they can't figure out how to bite. A mosquito may land on your Permethrin-treated shirt and not die, but it may be unable to bite you. To repel or kill the insect, the concentration has to be strong enough and the exposure time long enough to achieve this effect. Bottom line is if the rope doesn't work, it means you simply aren't exposing them to enough Permethrin. I'd try a treating a 8' x 8' piece of cheap lightweight fabric next. Also, I do know that the factory treatment removes some amount of PU coating on coated fabrics. However, I am not sure if it is the Permethrin itself or the factory's application process. I tend to think it is the latter but still, I wouldn't want to risk ruining a good tarp to find out. Best of luck!
that would scare the piss out of me. I hate spiders, especially huge ones. I'm glad I dont have to deal with tarantulas in Michigan
Gee, Thanks a lot MDSH, now I'm paranoid!LOL So much that I may start either sealing my shoes in large Ziplocking bags, or making a sealed no-see-um bag just for things I want protected from the creepy crawlies. Loads of ticks, spiders and fire-ants here.
My dog sleeps on a treated Mexican blanket under my hammock. I have found a ring of dead creepies around the edge of it on the morning!
