    Finished

Finally had a chance to pitch it during the daytime. The "half-door" flaps seem to work as well as I had hoped and cover the ends of my hammock nicely. Even reposing on a slight diagonal there is still 3-6 inches between feet/head and the half door flaps, even with the tarp pitched fairly high. I believe that if it were pitched low and closer to the hammock, as some of you suggested, it would make as near an impermeable shelter as could be expected from a hammock setup (except maybe the larger winter tarps with full doors I suppose). Whole setup including tarp, hammock, tree straps, and stakes is ~2.5lbs.

I'm extremely satisfied with my design and am trying to come up with a name for it now

Going to field test it this weekend, but the chance of rain is minimal.

From one Utahn to another, nice work! Looks like your plan worked out pretty well. I think the concern that most folks were expressing about the length being so slim is that many hammocks are closer to the 11ft length, but the Grand Trunk Ultralight you've got is a mere 9'6", so I'm sure it fits just fine. Nice work!

Looks very similar to the hennesy monsoon tarp. Looks great! Great job.
    I'd rather be hanging.

Yea it is very similar to the monsoon tarps, hadn't seen those before. Puts a little more credibility to my design, thanks!

    Field Test Success

Field tested my tarp. Hiked a mile up a local trail and had to hastily get setup when the rain started. I got the tarp up before it started raining hard and finished setting up my hammock under it. It rained fairly hard with little to no wind until around midnight;the wet trees dripped the rest of the night. I stayed perfectly dry and cozy all night. I carried a small piece of my old blue tarp for a welcome mat to put my pack and boots on under neath my hammock. The only thing that got wet was my pant legs from walking through tall wet grass to find a spot to hang.

Well done, jsorensen! Good to hear it worked for you. I might try this design on the next tarp I make--shave some grams without sacrificing protection. BTW I used to live in N Utah (`92-`99)--Ogden/Layton area.

Just got my brother converted and into a nearly identical setup.

Its small size still takes a little more tweaking to ensure the entire hammock is covered, but I'm getting better
