Start watching Craigs list for a good deal on a machine. You can learn. Lots of info and videos here and elsewhere. Read the articles about picking a machine. One of the old classics is what you want. Folks here will help and give advice. Sometimes even good advice.
Just make sure that it looks well taken care of, otherwise, be ready to take it to a local sewing machine repair place to have some TLC and maintenance performed on it. If you are willing to go the second route, hit up a Goodwill or similar thrift shop and purchase a machine from there. Just make sure that it comes with the foot pedal, power cord, etc...
