Prior to learning the stress put on the tree strap when the strap is held to the center of the tree as opposed to keeping the strap off to the side to a straight line is formed from the hammock to the tree, I used the "v" config. I still use stingers on each side of the tarp but not because of the "v" theory may warbonnet tarp is made not to use a continuous RL. I use a 10' hammock and a 10'6" tarp.

I use the "v". I hang my hammock first, unless it's raining, while my lines my rub and I can hear them when I first get in, I go to sleep so fast it's just a non issue. I suddenly feel very awkward and strange....oh wait, that's normal.

I'm a dedicated V guy using the continuous RL system so I can easily center the tarp between the trees, never really had a problem per se with the short tree distance, but I know what you're getting at.
    Good luck,

I have the tarp ridgeline "follow" the hammock suspension (have the tarp ridgeline attachment point at the tree be above the hammock suspension attachment point at that tree). There's much less opportunity for the hammock suspension to interfere with the tarp ridgeline. Not only that, but you can also extremely easily adjust the height of the tarp ridgeline off of the hammock.

Using the CRL that Derek Hansen showed us a while back.

Not for the V but mainly for the ease of centering the tarp.
Generally hang my CRL higher than my hammock suspension so the V is of no use.

While it's good to keep the tarp itself above the hammock straps to prevent rain from following it in (just hang it higher if it's touching), I think the whole "V" thing is way overrated. So what if the tarp and hammock suspensions touch? Unless you plan to intentionally swing the hammock very hard... so hard that you might stretch and tear the tarp, I don't really see the point of it. If you use suspension lines tied off to either end of the tarp, your tarp suspension lines can be almost half the length of what you would need otherwise to create a "V", meaning less chance of tangles. But to each, his own.
