Tarp Tie-Out Reinforcement

I'm making my first silnylon tarp (using the Hex Tarp pattern from DIY Gear Supply site) and having a struggle finding oxford nylon (I did find a few sites that have it but I am hoping to not have to wait to get more materials). I'm wondering if I can use more of the silnylon for the reinforcement or if there is an alternative that would work that I could probably find at a local fabric store. Any thoughts?
A separate question, is there anyone who uses an alternative to using the d-ring method for the tie-outs?

I just have the webbing loop at the tieouts, no d ring. For the reinforcements, I had on old pair of nylon pants and I cut that up. The idea is if the reinforcement is waterproof, water could wick in between and never dry out, resulting in that nasty mildew smell.

I used about a 6 inch piece of 1 inch wide grosgrain that I folded to follow the hem and then a smaller piece of grosgrain to attach the triangle. I will say that I've only used it twice, so can't comment on durability, but I know others use a similar method.
