1. Welcome to the forums from down at the beach!
2. Come to one of the group hangs planned this fall. The Yates Place Hang in late October is very close to you. You can learn so much very fast by seeing other hangers rigs.
There is also a hang at Watoga State park in south-eastern WV. Not too far north of Lewisburg. Not sure how far that is for you.
Take all the advice you can get, but remember to tweak it for yourself.
Throw away your mattress.
I'd rather be hanging.
Read read read and read some more
Hang yourself over and over and over and over again
Write nothing in stone
Be very very very wary of that Rabbit hole
Hang back, relax, enjoy the ride

Life is too Short to not feed the addiction....Hang on and explore the World

Tip... with all the talk about how great hammocks are, don't expect perfect sleep. That is one of the things that keeps us looking for nirvana - with new hammocks, etc., to improve the experience. - Kate Chopin
Be sure to hang your foot end higher, if you don't have a ridge line get one.
My two tips not necessarily in order are:
1. Do not hang any higher than you are willing to fall.
2. Do not underestimate the importance of bottom insulation be it an underquilt or pad or something else. Unless you are somewhere where the nights stay very warm you will need something.
