A buddy and I recently lollygagged our way through some of the best western Iowa and eastern Nebraska has to offer. Our three day trip started just north of Omaha on the Iowa side of the river at Hitchcock Nature Center, which is my favorite park for hours around. It's small-ish by some standards (1200+ acres), but it's packed with great activities, trails, campsites, views, etc. It sits in the beautiful Loess Hills overlooking the Missouri River valley and has both awesome prairie and forest cover. (Yeah, we have forests here in Iowa...and they're not made of corn!) The area was originally slated to be a landfill, believe it or not. It's an awesome park...can't say enough about it!
On the second night we headed to Indian Cave State Park in the southeast corner of Nebraska. It sits on the western slope of the Missouri River valley and overlooks the Loess Hills to the west. It features a "cave" that native peoples used in their travels up and down the Missouri waterway. The "cave" is a massive rock overhang that features dozens of petroglyphs. It's another beautiful park with tons to offer. It's also close by to another Nebraska favorite of mine, which you can see at the end of the video.
I'm no video doctor, so hopefully it's not a snoozer! Enjoy, folks!
