I would think bear spray should be effective on a cougar. Don't know about stopping power once he attacked but it should disable him enough so you could flee without pursuit if you could get him in time.

I still think about it and wonder if the cat would have just walked right by me if I hadn't yelled at her because she looked like she was just moseying down the trail. With that said, there is no way I was going to test that theory. lol
    Thanks for watching.

Bear spray would for sure work on a cougar. This cat was a rare experience and I really do think that it had no interest in me and we both just happened to cross paths on accident. It was a really cool site and I hope that cat is telling her friends about the smelly guy who yelled a lot.

High pucker factor for sure! Nice job on the video under the circumstances.

Used to think I kept calm in nervy situations, but you take this to a whole new level. Glad it worked out for you!

Thanks man. You never know how you will react until you get in those situations. I thought I would act completely different to be honest, but I admit that I'm happy with how it all went down.

    Really?

Leaving aside the fact that this was in a National Park, when would you have decided to shoot this cougar? It was showing no threatening behaviour so should we just shoot all carnivorous wildlife just in case? Chances are that if was interested in making a meal of Fronkey it would have been stalking him from behind. If you come across a cat with a fresh kill then it would probably be on you before you even pulled your gun. You're more likely to have shot yourself in the foot in chaos that ensued.

This is a really great piece of video. Just shows that keeping your head and not letting the adrenaline take control can be a win-win situation.

We clearly have different opinions and that is ok because this is America. First off, carrying a firearm in a national park has been legal since 22 Feb 2010. Second, I never said I would have drawn a firearm and shot the cat if I was in the same scenario. Making noise is always the best option until it isn't an option any longer. I prefer to hike armed for my own reasons and my own peace of mind. HYOH. Now back to your regularly scheduled program

Thanks a lot! I did have bear spray on me, but I'm very happy it went the way it did.

I personally don't carry a firearm or think it's even necessary as carrying spray and using the proper techniques to scare away an animal works 99% of the time. With that said, I have no issues with people if they want to carry and understand why they would want to. The woods can be a scary and dangerous place and having one on their person can make a person feel safe and have a better time out there because of it. I have a friend who has carried a sidearm for 15 years now while hiking and said he has never drawn it and it just makes him feel more comfortable out there. As stated. HYOH.
