Hello from Austin TX -- Just moved

My family and I just moved from upstate New York (Foot hills of the Adirondacks) to Austin TX. I have been backpacking for the last 2 years and have completed the NPT (Northville - Placid trail) located in New York. My hiking partner is Kylie, my 3 year old German Shepherd.

I joined this forum more to meet people around the Austin area and to learn a bit about hammocks. I am currently exclusively using a tent, mainly to keep my partner in check. However I have been thinking of giving hammocks a go. I like to do a lot of research prior so I will be spending some time reading this forum and getting an idea of what may or may not work for me.

Just thought I would stop and say hello. Back to browsing I go.....

Welcome from Florida! I have family in Austin and have hung with forum members in Texas. You'll find a great group of people there to hang with.

Welcome to Texas, i hang with my lab Maggie i sleep alot better at night with her, we have alot of hogs and she keeps things in the night away. I set up a sleeping area for her underneath my hammock but most of the time she lays where she wants. Check out the LSHT ( Lone Star Hiking Trail ) in the Sam Houston National Forest a little over 100 miles of trail. Happy hanging.

So jealous. The NPT is definitely on my list of trails to knock out soon. I don't have the time for a thru hike but I'm planning to start knocking out sections and getting my completion patch.

Welcome to the forums. Hammocks are a comfortable alternative to tents if you don't mind a little fiddle factor.

I'd suggest practicing a few nights by sleeping in your yard. Sleeping in a hammock takes some getting used to, but once you do, its great.
The more I learn about people, the more I like my dog.

Howdy from the land of Beer and Cheese!!

Several threads on hammocking with a dog on the forum. Easiest way to find 'em that I've found is to cut and paste the following into your browser.
