    Loyalsock trail guides

I'm planning a trip up to the Loyalsock State Forest for my son and I. I called the park office(Worlds End State Park) and had them send me all their trail brochures but they seem pretty lacking in detail. You can order Loyalsock trail guides from the Alpine Club of Williamsport for right around $20. Does anyone have one of these or know if they are adequate in detail for all the trails in the area?

I have one somewhere and if memory serves it is an excellent guide with maps. It is linear trail with some excellent vistas and scenery at palces. Be aware there are _NO_ campfires allowed near the eastern terminus at the haystacks. The area is well patrolled particularly over the weekends. A few badly behaved parties caused them to ban all campfires there. It's too bad too. It is a lovely spot.

The guide itself is pretty much limited to the Loyalsock trail and major alternate trails. Small branch spurs are not well documented if I remember correctly.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

I bought the guides a couple of years ago and found them useful. The guide book has removable pages, and I removed all but the ones I needed (Section 6 - World's End State Park), but I have all the maps. PM me your address and I'll send you what I have.

If you are hiking the LT the guide and maps are good to have. If you plan to travel off trail other map can be found. The updated public use map of the entire loyalsock state forest is much more detailed than previously. You can also find smaller maps of specific locations at world's end and ranger stations.

Also check out "hiking the Endless Mountains" by Jeff Mitchell. He describes a lot of different hiking options and some of the best stuff to see. That book is worth every penny. It will go with me on my 6 day adventure next week of the Loyalsock State Forest.

Hey Howling, I purchased the guild book and map set through the KTA ( Keystone Trails Association) 2 years ago. It was mapped out by the Alpine Hiking Club of Williamsport. It is detailed and accurate. I hiked about 1/3 of the Loyalsock from the Eastern terminus north of Laporte.

It's an awesome trail. I hiked it a while ago and the data book is well worth it. The one mistake I made on the trail (and you'll understand once you get the alpine club data book) was that I hit mile 55 at night and finished at night. Those last 8-9 miles run along some beatiful streams it's a great swim spot. I wish I would of hit those miles in the day time so I could of taken a dip before hiking out to the car. Also world's end state park is crowded in the summer I would suggest not camping their, however if you plan it right they have a great concession stand with burgers and dogs and what nots. Its saved me from carrying a days worth of food because I grabbed lunch their and hiked out dinner. Saved me from carrying a little weight on the front end of the trip. Hope you and your son have fun.
Sometimes I like to hike and think, And sometimes I just like to hike.

Hiking is'ent about waiting for the storm to pass its about learning to hike in the rain.
