    Eye Splice for Spyderline

Recently there has been a discussion about using Spyderline instead of Amsteel or Dynaglide due to the polyester cover of the Spyderline having a better coefficient of drag which will allow it to hold knots like the Beckett Hitch/Slippery Sheet Bend. It is available in 2.8 which is about the equivalent to Dynaglide (slightly stronger) up to 4.8 which would be the slightly stronger equivalent of 1/8" amsteel.

Spyderline is a double braid, so splicing it is a bit tricky and most directions you will find on the internet are for large ropes, which are way easier than 2.8mm line. If you are planning to include it as a part of your suspension, you may want to do as I do and have spliced eyes on each end: one end is for a loop to loop connection with the tree strap, and the other provides you a place to larks head a toggle to the very end of your line in case you need ever last inch of it.

I made this tutorial after research and practice so that it helps anyone contemplating this to avoid all the confusion that might be out there. I tried to make the instructions as dummy proof as I could because I know how confusing some of the info out there can be.

Thanks for the reply. The spyderline is a little different. It has a polyester sheath which makes splicing more complicated. Have to figure out what to do with the sheath.

Splicing it would probably be similar to this...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pGbCr7hnGX8...Best of luck to you.

Spyderline is better suited to knots.

When knotted, is spyderline significantly derated as Amsteel is? I.e. Is there a significant benefit to splicing spyderline rather than knotting it?

ANY knot will degrade the total strength of cord. I don't think putting a figure eight knot in spyderline would degrade the line to an un-safe standard. It has a polyester sheath that will keep the knot from capsizing. But, there is a significant benefit to splicing. It's stronger than a knot. Sailors have been doing it for years and it just looks better. With a little bit pf practice, I hope I can figure this out.

This is from the engineering team at New England Ropes. They are the ones that manufacturer spyderline. I was surprised to see a figure eight knot fail at 60% of the breaking strength. On 2.8 mm spyderline that would take it from a 1200 lbs breaking strength to 480 lbs. You sure you want to hang from that? A locked brummel splice or a core to core splice is what you'd want to do to preserve the 1200 lbs breaking strength.
