I will be staying near Playa del Carmen for a week. Are the local Mayan hammocks worth a look and any recommendations for a place which sells decent quality ones?
Thanks!

I didn't go out of the way to look, but all the ones I saw weren't something I'd carry into the woods.
Crayons - they might look different, but they all taste the same
I'd like to get a Mayan hammock, for daily indoor use! Are you willing to pick up an extra one?
If you make an effort (avoid the tourist traps and find a local market place) you can find excellent quality Mayan hammocks. Look for 100% cotton (burn a thread sample and smell it if you're not sure.) Many synthetics offered don't last like the cotton ones do. I tossed one I bought in the 70s' that turned to dust this yr. (unlike older pure cotton ones I own.) The big ones (matrimonios) are best for gringo poundage. Have fun and filter/boil your water - hepatitis A is prevalent in primitive camps/palapa sites.

Although warmer, I think it would be a good idea to have a "nylon/PolyD" hammock with the necessary straps and hardware. That way u will have something with you and not be induced to buy the first Mayan hammock u see. Plus, it would most likely just come with a pair of ropes.
