    Bizarre "Burnt" Heel in Hammock

    Hi All,
everytime I sleep in my hammocks in wool/ nylon blended socks, I wake up with my right heel burning. Like a carpet burn sensation.
I haven't experienced it when wearing cotton socks.

I'm thinking that either my circulation is being impeded and it has nothing to do with socks.
    OR
the nylon of the socks and the nylon of the hammock are rubbing and creating static. If that's possible.

    Any ideas?

If you don't feel it with cotton socks, then it's probably not a circulation problem, unless the nylon socks are really tight over a vein or an artery -- unlikely, IMHO.

Static from the wool / nylon blend socks rubbing against the hammock is a possibility. I can get static in the hammock depending on the humidity and the material my clothes are made of. Never had a burning sensation, though... just the little prickly zaps.

Do you try to lie at an angle in your hammock. If so that would mean your right heel is up against the side of the hammock that is being pulled tight. The pressure difference isn't really noticable, but it is there. It could be pressing against your heel and the wool fibers of the sock are pressing into your heel.

Nylon socks always make my feet feel like they are burning.

I've come to the conclusion that I just am sensitive to nylon socks.

Try wool and see if that makes a difference.

    Plantar Fascitis?

It could be that the hammock is highlighting the problem. You'll be unaware of it until you get into your hammock. The first thing you notice is that it feels like all the pressure of your legs is on your heels.

I have it... tightening of the calf muscles, which tightens everything connected from there down, right through the heel and the bottom of the foot. The resulting pain is felt in the heel and the foot.

When I sleep in a hammock, I get the kind of stretching that helps relieve the tightening. Stretching is the cure. You stretch your calves with your toes pulled up. This will happen while you sleep in your hammock; however, at first it can be very uncomfortable.

Halfway through the night, my legs will be warm and relaxed, and fully stretched. However, at times I wake up and find I'm hyperextending my knee, so I put the bottoms of my feet together to bend my knees, or place something under my knees.

I've experienced the "burning heel syndrome", and figured out it was from pressure on the back of my calf from the hammock. If I readjust a little it goes away. I have had it on either foot, depending on which diagonal I'm laying on. With or without socks, it didn't seem to make it worse or less. Warbonnet's foot box would probably resolve the issue.

Static hasn't been the problem, I have had it my cotton indoor sleeper, as well.
