Dunno about stable flies but deerflies and blackflies in northern WI and MN avoid me when I've used permethrin or DEET on my gear. Skeeters and ticks too, of course. Just one hiker's experience.

I was referring to mosquitos for the most part.
For flies I've good luck with Deerfly patches but still I was more saying go prepared to defend yourself. I do and find them managable for the most part.
Sorry ya'll got bugged out by bugs.

Sorry... reading failure on my part. Thought people were talking Pictured Rocks in Northern Michigan. Must have had my open tabs confused either that or still suffering flashbacks from the Stable Flies... yeah, the bug spray works just fine against the skeeters.

Thanks for all the chatter on bugs/timing/etc. Heading up in middle August for a two week wander.

Pretty much when the temps get below freezing is when the bugs start to go away. Other than that I will be wearing tightly woven nylon clothing with permethrin and meet does an awesome job too.

One hanger, and a few soon-to-be converted. haha There are a few others here on HF from around the area. I have never met them, though. Sounds like a N.I. group hang is in order.

The first week of October/last week of September are pretty much the peak for fall color.

Are there going to be any group hangs on the SHT around the end of Sept this year?
