Great time of year to plan a trip up on the trail. You never know about the fall colors...each year is different....but you picked a good time.
Also, this is helpful. Updated weekly.

Dang, my vaca got denied. Going to try for Oct. 2 now.
The first week in October has been FAN-FRIGGIN-TASTIC the last few years. I always try to do a few trips around then. Anywhere on the trail is grogeous, but for views and fall colors, it's hard to be Section 13.....

Hate to correct you there, but the Stable Flies don't respect permetharin or 100% Deet. Maybe they think its a good appetizer or something. Works just fine on the mosquitoes though. We just got back last week and managed a good 5 days but the southern winds were blowing those biters in and we ended up bailing a day earlier. We should have known they were going to be rough when our shuttle driver told us "God Speed" to us when she heard our trip plan.
Second the vote for going in the fall season when the bugs go away. Especially the stretch between 12 mile beach and chapel falls.
Whooooo Buddy)))) All Secure in Sector Seven
I've had the **** flies chasing me 20 feet out into Superior on a sandbar....I felt like Pigpen. I've had mixed luck in August in the UP, couples times no flies, couple times near biblical levels. September has been MUCH better with bugs, can be a bit chilly (good from my standpoint).
Hope to be going last week of September looking forward 2i th a hopeful eye
It's not the boulders that throw us off balance, it's the pebbles beneath our feet
