Summer Camp with my Scout Troop at Camp Arrowhead

Spent the last week at Summer Camp with my Troop and got to enjoy my brand new DutchWare Nylon D in the process. You never know how well your gear will handle the weather until you try it. It rained every day at camp, including over 6" in under 12 hours from the remnant of Tropical Storm Bill that decided to basically park itself right on top of us. Not one drip through my fly or down my suspension lines to my hammock. Where as I and another adult using similar gear stayed dry all week, I can't say the same for my boys who spent the week in those green scout tents.

    Been there done that.
I was the Scoutmaster for our troop for a couple of years...And, it seemed that almost every trip we went on it would rain. You'd think after a while of my son and me watching the rivers run under our hammocks right into their tents they'd figure it out. Eventually, we had a bout 6 boys in hammocks and only a few hold-outs in tents. Love me a good storm in a hammock. Looks like you coulda used a set of doors on your tarp to keep everything dry, but then again, with 6" in 12 hours just about everything is wet, so who knows :?D
    Thanks for sharing.

It pays to have good gear. I hope the boys weren't too disappointed with the weather. Don't want them to get a bad taste for camping. Maybe it will be a good example for them to consider hammocks as the way to go.

Water just falls from the sky in your area? That is awesome!

My 13yo Star scout and I will be setting up hammocks at our Troop's summer in July.

I will be using my hammock at summer camp in July as well. I prefer it to the old cots and mattresses that are in the canvas tents. It will be the first year in a hammock but the 14th year at camp!

Looks great. I used a hammock at camp this year also instead of my cot that I used in years past. Now I am trying to convert some of the scouts, especially for backpacking trips.

The boys took the weather in stride, not one complaint about being wet. Not to brag too much but they swept the Troop competitions they had our week, when you're having fun it's easier to overlook other issues.

GEE! That looks like our summer camp last week in Oklahoma. Rained for four out of six days. The trails became rivers, and the poncho was never out of hand.

It rained two days at our scout camp. Same thing, boys took it in stride. I was a little surprised, being in AZ they are not used to it. It is nice to see the scouts find ways to have fun no matter what is thrown at them.

One question for you...how did the canvas scout tents hold up at yours? All our boys got a little wet, either from drips from the center pole, or from water leaking in at the edges.
