I am going to buy a vertex should I buy the insulation to go with it or would a uq be better? The other thing I could do is us a pad.

I have the Vertex and the z-Liner. It depends on how cold you are going to go with it. If you are planning on temps consistently below 30 degrees I'd say underquilt. If you aren't the z-liners are easy to use, light (not as compressible as i'd like but I haven't got a down underquilt to compare against), and are super easy to attach with the built-in velcro. If you have the Z-liner you shouldn't 'need' a pad until you get down into something really cold. If you are in a lot of windy area's and it's cold you'd need to adjust your tarp as a bit of a windbreak or put some sort of a wind barrier in place but I have a feeling that would be the same with a UQ.
This is the review I did on my Vertex and Z-liner. Hopefully it helps.

That helps I live in Montana but when I mostly hang will be in July and August so temp should be in the 40 to 50 degree range. So z-liners should work just fine unless I use it during hunting season. What is the difference between a pad and z- liners?
The z-liners are like an underquilt that velcro's on instead of using a hanging suspension. They go on the outside. I find that I'm a bit of a cold sleeper and anything over 60 is good with just the z-liner and a cheap fleece blanket (think dollar store $8 kind of single layer fleece).
I have the 150 and Z-Liners. I also made six down tubes that stuff into the underbelly of the tarp. My last hang, I was too hot (temps were in the mid 40s).
The Z-Liner versus underquilt: you will have NO gaps with the Z-liner. The velcro will make sure of that. The Z-liner is synthetic -- does not pack small.
I had a KAQ underquilt that I could never get snugged enough to prevent the cool air from getting under it, so I sold it and moved to the Z-liner. So far, I am happy with my decision.
Thanks guys that helps a lot z-liner it is.
I have a NX 250 with z liner...Another big plus from me for the z liner...attach it at home, no fiddling out in the field, super easy, convenient and warm.
Another benefit with the z-liner, if it DOES get hot you can always bunch the velcro a bit and create vents to suit.
