    Knot for tree huggers...

Can I just take 10ft of 1" webbing and make a loop, trucker hitch?, wrap around the tree, pass through loop and marlin spike to whoopie sling? Seems like everyone sews their straps, is there a reason no one does knots/loops? Seems really easy, wondering if there's a flaw in that setup by strength.

    Thanks!

Knots works just as good. But it will use more strap than a sewn loop. Also may want to tie a water knot instead of an overhand.

A knot will actually derate the strap a little bit, but plenty of people have success with it. You can use knots, but a sewn loop is better due to higher strength and less strap needed.

True, but a MSH is a knot, too.

Dumb question and showing my ignorance time: Is a Marlin Spike Hitch a knot or a lashing? And no matter which, as used on a tree strap, wouldn't the degradation in strength be exponentially less than a knot with force on both sides, rather than merely a stopper like a MSH in this case? I wouldn't think there would be any comparison. But thinking is where I often go wrong ....
