    Pipe hammock stand questions

    I want to make this:
    uploadfromtaptalk1434346687197.jpg

Do you think 3/4 or even 1/2 inch pipe would work instead of 1 inch. I weigh like 235 if that matters

As said no. Check out the ones using chain link fence fittings though. They should be a little cheaper and lighter. You can get a tapered piece, so that the horizontal spots together.

I made mine out of old tarp garage pipes and elbows (craigslist, metal scrap yard etc). The only alterations to the materials I made was to cut two of the 6' poles in half for feet. I also cut shims for all the joints because it fits very loosely, out of the plastic bottom of a reusable shopping bag. I painted it olive drab to blend in. It is 2" steel pipe. Not light, but probably about 35#. I keep it in 3 parts at our scout troop's base camp because the only two good tree spots are already spoken for.

What are the thoughts on the use of 36 inch length pipe to assist in putting it in the trunk of a car. I know this will mean more joints and possible weakening of the joints. But wanted to know if anyone else has tried this yet or if we need a first.

Hammeck stands are 4' I think, and they use a pretty neat joint system.

I used 6' lengths for mine but I see no reason why 3' sections would be an issue. You'll want to bring along a couple of pipe wrenches to ensure proper/strong connections. Hand tightening the pipes just doesn't get enough of the threads engaged IMO.

    Good luck & enjoy!

P.S. I bought all my pipes at Lowes last summer and it cost me about $130 if memory serves.

I paid 96 for everything(at Lowe's ) yesterday, but I didn't spring for end caps on the feet. I'm thinking I might need them to stop the annoying wabbling when I first get in.

Has anyone tired the three 3' sections with 2 unions vs 1 union?

Why do you need a union?
    1. Screw together the top 72” pipes with couplings.
    2. Then add an elbow on each end.
    3. Screw in the remaining 72” pipes.
    4. Add the tees and 24” pipes.
