    Sewing Machine Suggestion

    Hey guys!

Im about to launch myself into DIY projects.

Im just wondering if you guys have any suggestion for a sewing machine. Ive been looking on amazon.ca ( im in canada ) and found this one for pretty cheap :

    https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00...n&sr=1-1-fkmr0

just looking for advice before purchasing it. im concerned of the heavy duty-ness causing issue working on thin materials ... any input on that ??

Im really a beginner in sewing ... so take it easy on me

    cheers!

most people here use and recommend the older machines. I mean like 6- years old. I have a singer 15-91 and several others like this I have found at a local thrift store or craigslist.

they all go forwards and reverse. and will go from sewing sil to tree straps without a hiccup.

My first sewing machine I purchased was a Kenmore 158 from Goodwill. $25 and just needed some tlc, and it even came in a cabinet. It was made in the 1970's and will probably still work 40 years from now. Don't overlook the older machines. IMO, most are made to last longer than some of these new plastic ones.

Find an old all metal machine at a thrift store. Plug it in and sew a few different materials with it. Take your own thread and material....trust me on this.

Anyway, I found my old Atlas for $40 at the local thrift store. Beautiful (PINK!) machine, sews anything I put under it. I've learned the hard way that new machines don't like the kind of sewing we do (ask my wife...it's her machines I've broken).

If you don't grunt a little when you lift it, it's too new and too mamby-pamby a machine for you! Even my old Kenmore "portable" feels like it needs grips on each end rather than a handle on top!

I have a Kenmore that is pushing 50lbs. I almost threw my back out moving it the first time. LOL

That's a nice machine. If you are interested, there is a lot of info out there about vintage machines and you can likely get it working well if it doesn't already work. Fiddling with vintage machines can be fun but if you're not interested in putting in some work, try some local sewing shops that sell used machines. Also, Kijiji, Goodwill, and other thrift stores often have older machines for under $50.00 that will be fine for DIY gear. I've bought good working machines for $30.00 that only needed some oiling and cleaning (something you should do to any machine anyways). Ask around your family and friends as well. Good chance there's a machine gathering dust somewhere.
