Like Scott said, On fabrics, Ed is about the best source out there for small quantities, if you are buying on the commercial volume to get a wholesale price there are a few other options but Ed has just about everyone else beat for the DIY and your supporting a fellow hanger.

Ed definitely has great prices on the things he carries, and thru-hiker is a good source for stuff Ed doesn't stock, like momentum.

I did not see it mentioned, but I came across some Sil and Ultra Sil here: Rocky Woods

Not cheap but they have some color selection.

OK, so I ordered some of the $3/yd 30 denier (1.3 oz ???) silnylon from Noah Lamport. It arrived, but the quality is more like the plastic stuff that disposable ponchos are made of. I was planning to make some raingear with it but I'm not certain it will hold up to the tension or stress.

He did send me some swatches and color samples though of the urethane coated stuff and it is seems to be more what I want (1.9 oz 70 denier) but costs $4.95 + cut + shipping.

Barry, when I got the Noah Lamport sil, I thought it felt incredibly thin and lightweight - however, after it was sewn into tarp form, with edge binding and seams and stuff, it felt a lot more similar to other sil tarps I own.

It's been pulled plenty taut during tarp pitches and seen no damage so far. I would give it a shot before you give up on it. I thought it felt crazy light, but it turned out to be just what we needed for an awesome winter tarp.

The 1.1 sil that I bought at OWFinc. seemed the same way. In fact 1.1 is slightly translucent. I have made many stuff sacks that I can say they are waterproof. I made a 12 x 10 winter tarp and it has held up quite nice in the rain.

I would make something out of the material and test it before you give up on it.

This stuff is slippery... so make sure you have things lined up before you start sewing. It's not that bad once you get use to the stuff.

Isnt' the 1.1 the stuff every one said would mist in HEAVY rain? I only ask because I live in Oregon and I think we define RAIN like Death Vally defines HEAT!

No, I'll make something out of it. I don't think it is strong enough for a tarp but I may try anyway (or a UQ). Just wanted to pass on what I found out.
