We should definitely do some meet ups, I'm up for anywhere in Wisconsin
We should definitely do some meet ups, I'm up for anywhere in Wisconsin
Shelter #3 has a very nice view(on a hill top overlooking the surrounding area), and is right off of Duffin Rd(you can park on the side of the road). I'm not sure if there are enough large trees to support a group hang though. There is an outhouse there I believe. It also has an outhouse IIRC.
I'm going to Wyalusing that weekend, so i can't join you guys. Have fun though!
To be clear, I'm all for meeting at a shelter rather than a designated campsite. However, having looked it up before posting last time, I had noticed that all of the shelters in KMSF-SU are booked that weekend. For future planning, there are good maps of Shelter 3 and info on parking near there here:
https://www.hammockforums.net/forum/...-Come-have-fun!!!
BTW, at the time of this post all of the sites reservable online in KMSF-SU are booked that weekend for the following campgrounds: Hickory Woods, Pine Woods (1-299 and the group sites A-D), Ottawa, Whitewater East and all but 3 at Whitewater West.
That leaves the Horserider's camp and walk up sites as the only available options in KMSF-SU for that weekend.
This being the busy season someone needs to get a RSVP in ASAP if this is going to happen.

We stayed at #3 this winter. It is easy to get to. You can only camp in KM in a shelter or campsite. They do not allow rustic camping.
I can backpack too. As long as it is less than ten miles
Get lost in the woods and find yourself again. A vacation,to me, is working with your hands and surviving because of the fruits of your labor. In the business world I teach;in the natural world I learn.
A call to reserve an IAT shelter is probably the best bet. Find a weekend when a pair of consecutive shelters are available and plan around that, any of which are less than 10 miles apart IIRC.
County road ZZ trailhead to shelter #1 Fri, hike over to shelter #2 Sat would give everyone a good taste of the area. Or do it the other direction. Cars can be parked at the forest headquarters to shuttle back to the trailhead, or vice versa.
The soonest shelter #3 is available is July 24-25, per a call to reserve America this afternoon.
Dates I was told #3 is available:
July 24-25
31-Aug 1
August 14-15
21-22
28-29
September 4-5
If I get a chance, I'll see about the other shelters (my preference) tomorrow. If anyone beats me too it, or reserves a shelter......
I just wanna say for last minute guys that when the weather is bad there are usually available camp sites on weekends but it's better to call and ask before living home. Pinewoods campground smels nice
Yup, most public campgrounds in WI have several walk up only (not reservable online) sites. By the way you can see whether they are already reserved online, just can't hold them online. Get there before 10am on a Friday and you stand a good chance of snagging a site even during the busy season. Earlier is better. Early bird gets the site!
Best to see what's available and if they're hangable before plunking any money down. Since the EAB reared its ugly head the WI DNR has been chopping down every tree in sight.

Those dates conflict with other things going on. I guess Im out. When you're too busy to hang then I guess you're just too busy
