Hi everyone!
I got back into hammock camping in the last few years and love it. I never liked sleeping on the ground and I'm a big guy so not into a 2 man tent. I've attended a hang with the Palmetto State Hangers and it was awesome. I'm looking for a similar group to hang with in the GA area.
I've also started making my own hammocks. When I broke my 15 year old hammock at my nephews scouting retreat it was time for a new hammock. I purchased one (not to be mentioned) with a bug screen. I took it to Florida during the summer and realized a non-breathable fabric with temps in the 80's at night was not the best choice. Tossing, turning, sweating, and ripping the bug net left me sleeping in the sand that night.
I came home and started making my own version of a hammock. Easier said than done to improve on a classic. I made some prototypes, then broke them, then modified them, then broke them, then remade them, then broke them, then changed fabric, then broke them, then reinforced them, then broke the sewing machine, then made more versions, then broke them, then finally the hour before a weekend camping getaway made a version that worked.
I'm really happy with the design. It is very small, has a flat lie and has great views. Depending on the feedback I get here I am thinking of perhaps selling them sometime in the future. The design can be very lite as it only takes 3 square yards of fabric or I've been using a heavy water poof, windproof fabric to good success. I'm very interested to hear what others have to say about the design both the good and bad. I'm also interested in connecting with GA/AL/SC/FL hangers to plan some casual weekend hangs.
