After a lot of research and the go gettem attitude of forum members jumped right in and made 5 under quilts and 2 top quilts for friends and family. Again appreciate all the info provided by members. The build info is a gathering from many previous members.
What I learned:
1. Make sure that when you pin the layers you pin ALL the layers. Nothing worse than inverting and finding 1 layer did not get sewn
2. Sewing zipper to top quilt was most frustrating. 1st one just sewed the zipper straight to the fabric. The thickness of it made this a bit tough. 2nd one I left the bottom sides open and used that area to invert then sewed the zipper to the opening using the method of placing the edge of fabric to the edge of the zipper then rotate zipper over and sew again. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0BruF6Hk9NU (5 1/2 min mark). Unfortunately this didn't allow me to easily incorporate the insulation and it slipped into the quilt more than I would want. If I where to do it again I would probably do the same but invert and sew the edges and insulation together after inverting the quilt then use this zipper sew on method.
Love to hear others thoughts on easier or better ways. Wish I could figure out how HG does it for my sweet down quilt.
3. I liked the addition of the silk blanket binding on the top of the one quilt. It hid the edge well and hey who doesn't like running your fingers and face with a "blankie" when out in the woods with scary critters?! (the child in me)
4. Finally for all those waiting just do it. Really much easier than we think. Your sewing can look terrible but noone sees it because it gets inverted. The cutting and pinning is the long and hard part. Sewing is easy.
