    Yet another silnylon question

    Hi all
first post here on the forum
I'm in the market for a new tarp, previously I've used an ex-military basha but it's quite heavy and I seem to have lost it!
I'm fairly experienced at sewing so I trust my abilities to make one. However I know absolutely nothing about silnylon, which seems like the material to go for.
I know I can buy silnylon already made, but at £4-5 a meter it seems quite expensive
I was wondering if I could buy some kind of ripstop material like this http://goo.gl/r0iE0L and make the silnylon coating myself (silicone caulk and white/mineral spirits)
This won't be for extreme weather, so I don't fancy shelling out for the more expensive ones
    thanks
    Eulis

    Welcome to the forum!

While you can mix silicone and mineral spirits, I believe due to the time, effort, and hassle involved most recommend to just use silnylon. There is an ebay seller with a pretty good deal, 7 yards comes out to $27.95 US shipped. http://www.ebay.com/itm/PACIFIC-BLUE...-/221767965485
It might cost more to ship it to England though.

Also the factory made silnylon will have a more consistent application of the silicone, whereas the mineral spirits method will yield a heavier material that has some extra silicone and possible uneven coating.

    Good luck in your endeavors.

I'd buy it. Making your own is a hassle...

Ripstopbytheroll has really good prices on silnylon. Check out the new silpoly. It's easier to work with, and doesn't stretch when wet like silnylone

Thanks for all the replies! Saw a video on youtube, he made it seem so easy!
As I say, no experience with silnylon so wasn't sure.
UK silnylon comes in about $8 a yard, and weighs approx 2.5 oz a yard, so you can see why I wasn't keen!
Thanks jjr, that link looks good, the 6 yards I'd need comes to only $28.10, international postage only $11! Shame about the colour, but at that price you can't complain.
I have emailed Ripstopbytheroll just in case, but I'd imagine their shipping rates will be quite expensive
again, thanks for all the replies

Besides, true siliconized nylon is not coated. It is infused under multiple atmospheres of pressure.

    Accept no substitutes

I made my own silnylon tarp and mixing it wasn't that hard, or applying etc. I wanted the experience in doing it.

That said, next tarp, I will buy factory silnylon. Like Loki said, accept no substitute with silnylon.
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you
