    Best Underquilt Given These Factors?

I just spent about three hours reading through the forums about underquilts and have narrowed it down to the factors below. I'm leaning toward UGQ because I read their quilts include HyperDry but I don't know if other makers also include this or some variation of it. Many thanks to the hundreds of posters who contributed to the posts I read from the past, and to those who respond to this thread.

My setup so far: BIAS Hammock, snake skins, NOAH 12 tarp, using an unknown sleeping bag as top insulation - not sure its rating, can't find it anywhere on it, but I've been comfortable in it down to at least 45*. I plan to get a 20* or 30* down bag at some point but I think the UQ is the priority.

    1. I want down, mainly for space savings, but also for weight savings.

    2. Despite my decision to go with down, I am concerned about the risk of getting it wet at some point (it does rain in AZ).

    3. I want full length. I hated trying to get a pad to stay in place all night, although I realize many people are just fine with it.

    4. I want the least fussy suspension system (I may need to research this more, or are they all the same now days)?

    Hyper Dry Down

I have an opinion on which quilt vendor to go with but it is probably biased....

I have heard that a company called Hammock Gear also uses Hyper Dry water resistant 850 down in all of their quilts.

Hammock Gear uses hyper dry and also has a one of a kind design that contours to your body while laying in the hammock (differential cut). Those 2 coupled with exclusive use of argon fabric (incredible feel) and a bullet proof suspension, I went with hammock gear...a few times...in fact I have purchased 3 sets of quilts from them.

Call Adam, if you don't feel comfortable after that, narrow your search.

    I hope this helps.

I own quilts from both Hammock Gear and UGQs. Both companies make excellent products.

Jacks r better uses active dry or something like that. Same thing. Their economy underquilts are versatile to be used as a topquilt or an underquilt. I love them so much I have 8 of them. Different temp ratings of course!

I just ordered from Hammock Gear due to 2 factors. Reviews on suspension seem to be better-less fidgeting. Also, the UGC site had a little too much marketing speak for me. Seemed like the marketing language in the site was overselling too hard which is a turn off for me.

One more thing. If you have a sleeping bag for a TQ, keeping a partial pad in place for your feet seems like an easy thing to do. Put it in your bag. Then save the money, bulk, and weight by buying a 3/4 UQ.

I wouldn't trade my Zeppelin for the world! While I haven't had hands-on experience with HG, I feel the suspension on my UGQ is idiotproof. It goes back and forth from my Clark to an ENO and tablecloth to my DIY 11'er with ease. I like the width and I agree with you on full length. A pad is a PIA and I hate suspension lines running by my feet and ankles.

I think all cottage quilt makers are using some brand of dry down now. Not sure about the big brands like ENO etc. but I would stay away from those anyway (heavy, not very warm).

HG and UGQ are both quality quilt makers. HG quilts seem to be a bit lighter, and they are a bit cheaper.
