Tarp for a 10.5' hammock (Dutch Argon 1.6): Simply Light Simplicity Asym vs. Equinox 8x10

I am working on building up another kit and I’d like to keep the hammock + tarp + suspension at around $100. So far I’m at about $50 between the Dutch Argon 1.6 and some 15’ tree straps. The structural ridgeline and hammock ridgeline can be made with rope + parts that I already have.

I’m looking for a tarp that comes in around $50-$60 and the two contenders are:

Equinox 8x10 Silnylon tarp: 1lb 11oz but it gives you a full rectangular coverage. I will be running a 83% ridgeline on the hammock which is 104" long. This will leave only 8" of tarp on each end of the hammock, is this enough?

    or the

Simply Light Designs Asymetrical tarp: This guy is lighter, just a bit more expensive but I've never used an asymmetrical tarp and I'm a bit worried about blowing rain. The 140" longer ridgeline length on it will easily cover the top of a 104" hammock ridgeline, but I won't know how the side coverage will look until I set it up.

    Any advice?

How about a Chinook 12 x 9.6. Decent price. Good coverage.

I can't speak directly to your question, as I've always used hex tarps. I can say that Jared's (SLD) quality of workmanship and customer service is second to none.

SLD is an awesome company but I'm very skeptical of asym tarps.

Also keep in mind that while Dutch was planning to standardize his hammocks at 10.5', he reversed course and is standardizing at 11'.

I just ordered an 11 foot argon from Dutch and looking for a good hex. I'm guessing although an 11 foot ridgeline can work it would be wiser to go 12. 10.5 hammock would have been nice for tarp choices indeed.

Also looking for 11 foot fornkey (or other no-zip) bugnet. I don't mean to hijack the thread and perhaps should start another if I don't turn something up in forum search

I was thinking about ordering another tarp also and was looking at mountain wilderness gear! Might be worth checking out.
We're all pretty bizarre. Some of us are just better at hiding it, that's all.

An 11 foot tarp ridgeline will work just fine for your 11 foot hammock. Many people prefer 11 foot tarps over 12 foot tarps because a 12 foot tarp can limit site selection - it's too long to fit between some pairs of trees, and can interfere with your hammock suspension.

The lightest weight fronkey type bugnet available at the moment is the Butt in a Sling Nano Buginator SUL, which is made from Ripstop by the Roll's 0.5oz noseeum mesh.

Dutchware also has a less expensive but heavier net available:
