Lightbulb How To Avoid Tearing Your Tarp - A Discussion

We all want to take good care of our gear so that it serves its purpose for many seasons to come. I wanted to open the floor for tips / advice on how to take care of your tarp.

-- What are some methods you utilize, in order to avoid tearing your tarp - especially when out in the wilderness?

-- Do you fold your tarp any specific way when packing it up?

-- How often do you service your tarp?

I would love to hear some answers to these (and other) questions you may have.

    Cheers,
    Jinx

Snake Skins work great! Doesn't matter who makes them, the concept keeps them from flapping around when not deployed.

Reflective tie out cords keep people from tripping over it.

I never fold, just stuff it, and always hang to dry a few days when I get home so it's perfectly dry before storing.
    Good luck,

Snakeskins then fold then wrap ridgeline around. Once ridgeline is undone it should come undone easily.

Some great point this far but I'll add: Reduce sun exposure as much as is possible and try to avoid wear patterns from things such as hammock suspension and pole mods

Stuff it away, don't fold it. Dry it before putting it away. Don't keep in exposed to the sun, needlessly (ie; hanging in your back yard for weeks). Reflective tie-outs are are a good idea. Don't have campfires or anything that sparks near it. Be careful when setting up / taking down that it doesn't snag on a branch, brush, thorns, etc. (Last one is a biggie, IMO!)

What has been said; snake skins, or bishop bag sleeve, tube, ect so its easy to deploy. Mine never gets folded. I will shake and wipe with a bandana before pulling the skins over it. Don't store it long if its wet. On the trail I unstake it and shake. I wipe it if its really soaked. I'll open it up at the next stop later the same day. No worries for that long. There is not much choice if its raining cept to put it away wet! Reflective line if you are with others and someone might not see the lines. The reflective line or some way to locate it if you get away from where you have it hung. I have a zipper pull size I'll turn on as porch light. If you want stealth then that's different; no lights, lines or bright colors. A big white or even grey tarp can stand out in the right light which is bad for stealth mode.I look at my tarp twice a day when I'm on the trail. Its good to spot problems when its a small fix.

I fold and roll. IMO, the dont fold is a holdiver from the days of urethane coated poly tarps. The idea stemmed from folding the same line continually would causexa crease which would wear off the coating. So far I havent been able to fold a silnylon tarp in the same exact spot twice. The only times creases appear is from stuffing it. Been using the fold and roll methid for years without an issue. But if others are worried, they can do what they wish.

Agreed on the never the same place twice with slippery sil. I guess that meansb
I'm kind of a folder then in that it gets draped across the ridge line a time or two prior to going in the skins. I'm often not too fussy as its coming back out the same day. Just sayin'.
