How do you handle wind?

I am relatively new to no warm weather hammocking. Last weekend I went into the woods to practice. It was 40 degrees or so, however quite windy with 20 mph winds and higher gusts,not that bad but still significant. I was warm with a top and bottom quilt, and a hat on my head, but the wind coming through the hammock onto my face did bother me a little. How do people deal with that, or does it just not bother you after a while? Should I have brought the tarp in more to block the wind? I could feel some of the heat getting pulled out of the bottom quilt, so I added a homemade silnylon undercover- I made it as a wind locker but people here seem to call them undercovers.

I made my tarp specifically to be a lean-to that goes all the way to the ground on one side just to stop the wind, and it does an admirable job at.

I have an over over on my hammock to keep the wind out. I haven't needed one for my uq since its rated at 0f

Four-season tarp with doors like the Superfly or my HG Winter Palace. I never have to worry about wind.

Look for spots that are more sheltered if you can. The down wind side of a small hill, a thicker area of trees, brush. Then position if you can so that your tarp will help to block the wind from the side rather than it coming in the end. Wind does shift so that only goes so far. Then stake the tarp down as low as you can get it. If you have it, hang your pack on one end to help form a block. From there if it blowing in your face is bugging you then use a light weight face mask or buff to help block the chill. Pull your top quilt up over your head if you need to. Ear plugs are a big help to me on windy nights.

Site selection is the most important thing, after that it helps to use a tarp with doors like an UGQ WinterDream or a WB Superfly.

Experiment, part of the fun is learning and much later talking about disasters.

I like to Hang in spots along the Oregon Coast, lots of wind and moisture. It took a while to learn how to use my tarp to keep me dry and keep the wind from robbing my heat. Someplace in the middle I decided I am claustrophobic.

After near drowning a few times, I learned how to pitch a fairly small rainfly to keep the wind off of me and stay dry, without becoming claustrophobic in the process.

Fact is I am an Adrenaline Junkie, maybe all my life, probably... I love Hanging in storms, I love the feel of my hammock going in all directions, for me it is a major high. Trees swing in toward each other, hammock drops, trees go back to upright position hammock goes up, wind gust pushes hammock to one side or the other, or maybe forward and back. As long as no branches come down and hit me or my gear all is good. So far no tree's I have been using for support have broken or toppled over.

Some of the attraction to Hanging is learning to innovate, for me at least each Hang is a different experience. I am always changing how I manage, unfortunately I am also changing hammocks a bit too much.

I just love the wind and storms as long as I am warm and dry, Hanging makes everything better. I always feel like I am winning over the elements. Practice, practice

I use a hammock sock for wind protection but after reading IronFish45's wonderful description above - I want the storms

Problem is, here in central Oregon, if those big Ponderosa's are "swaying" at the hammock suspension level, then ... Houston, we have a problem.
