Been thinking about this myself of late. Noticed that on some of the thinner barked trees, such as Paper Birch, you can see where the 1" straps dug into the bark a little many weeks later. Might be purely cosmetic, yet why take the chance? "Don't make a problem, there won't be a problem."

As to whether 2" straps will significantly reduce that, time will tell. Worth a try.

I have something in the works for this. I know I have been quiet lately but you can believe I have not been idle. I have new fabric, finished products, a new big and tall line that will have 2 inch straps....

    Dutch,

What about good old retro stuff in aluminum for the 2" need? Would still beat a 'biner.

Never have hung on a birch or similar. Seems like this might be a good reason for all of us to avoid doing so in the future(?) Maybe regardless of webbing width(?)

was gonna suggest to make a 2-3 inch sleeve for current suspension system, to make it compliant with current state rules. I use thicker barked trees such as oak, hickory, cottonwood, spruce, pine, etc when I can. Also larger trees when possible. Figured everyone else was also.

I have been able to see a slight indentation and a little abrasion of the bark mainly on younger trees (<8"dia). So far birch have shown it the worst though young maples and cottonwoods have also.

Maybe as a hunter, trapper, tracker, primitive skills, wild edibles, etc kind of guy I just pay more attention to such things. That or maybe I'm a lil OCD.

Is it damaging the trees? No apparent damage so far. Still, why give anyone a reason (real or imagined) to run down our hobby? Hate for us to be lumped in with those who leave clotheslines, nails, etc in/on trees in campgrounds.

That being said, I'd LOVE to see sew on dutch clips (or adutchable clips) capable of taking 2" webbing. I've made a few pair of the 2" to 1" conversion straps, but I have a hard time giving up my dutch clips.
I really hope NY isn't going to follow in the footsteps of FL. 2" straps are ridiculous. Do they really think that 1 1/2" straps damage the trees and 2" straps don't. This is just another example of the nincompoops who make our laws.
