    Whoopie Slings Question

I've been wanting to ask this question but it may be a really dumb one:

Why do people use whoopie slings? Is it just to save a little weight? I have a warbonnet blackbird and I don't mind the straps that came with mine. What would I get from whoopie slings were I to switch? Just curious. Thanks!

Weight is definitely 1 reason, pack size is another (Whoopies generally pack smaller then those straps), Whoopies adjust easier in my opinion but I have always been a bit retarded when it comes to those strap buckles. The main reason for my decision was that I had amsteel laying around the house from other projects so I could make whoopies up myself without needing to purchase anything else. To be completely honest I think its pretty much just personal opinion, I personally like to say "Whoopie" whenever I can.

To me it is a just a choice. I just enjoy them. Bit less bulk and weight but that is negligable. Rather save substansial weight in other areas. Just fun to say Whoopie too. If you switched you would get to say whoopie a bit more.
Just a choice. Like automatic VS stick shift kinda.

It's also cool to hang from something that is only 7/64 of an inch in diametre.

It's also fun to see folks who are new to hammocks as they look at the tiny little line that is gonna hold them off the ground. That look of...."there's no way that will work". They do seem easier to adjust and they are fun to make.

Probably depends on what you started with. Hennessey lashing figure 8 was my first experience. Shug's vids made whoopie slings look cool, and Derek Hansen had them in his book. They are relatively easy to make and just plain fun to use.

I hated my HH OEM suspension and have been experimenting with various options. I recently ordered some continuous loops, whoopie slings, and whoopie hooks from Dutch and am quite pleased with the ease of use and light weight system. Some complain about the need to find trees spaced further apart when using whoopie slings, but my whoopies even work on my hammock stand. I think it's safe to say I've found a suspension system I'll stick with.

Underneath somewhere we all have a kid still inside us. Who doesn't fondly remember the Chinese finger trap?

The fact that I am the master of that constrictive power and I can use it to keep me off the ground just makes me happy.

Weight/bulk reduction also really is a big deal if you are a backpacker doing any sort of distance. A few ounces here and a few ounces there make a big difference if you're walking 25,000 steps a day for weeks or months on end.
