Just wanted to let anyone know that when hammock hanging, don't skimp on the equipment. While hanging at home during lunch one day, I decided to use a ratchet strap for the tree suspension...but I ran the working end through the loop of the hook. I should have used the hook on the working end of the strap, but I was rushing so I could enjoy a lunchtime hang.
Ten minutes into my hang, i rolled onto my left side and one end of the suspensions failed me and I cushioned my fall with my upper ribs on a 2in. log underneath. Needless to say, I thought I broke a rib...but after a trip to ER, it was just a bruised rib.
From what I can tell what happened, I assumed when I rolled onto my side in the hammock, the strap in the ratchet hook loop slid out between the end of the loop. It looks like it cut the plastic sheathing and slipped between the end of the loop that I thought was welded closed...and the rest is history.
After this ordeal, I immediately placed a purchase for correct tree straps and waiting on the ribs to heal so I can try it again.
Moral of the story: Use correct gear or make sure to inspect your gear before you use it...ouch!
