It becomes bonded to the fibers in your clothing when it dries, and doesn't unbind if it gets wet again.

Sprayed the kid's hammocks and mine last night

Should it be reapplied to clothes after every wash or is it good for a few washings? How often are folks applying it to gear?

It can last a few washings. I think most people reapply every 3-4 months.

From the Amazon listing for the Sawyer spray product:

    • Lasts up to 6 weeks or up to 6 washings

So 42 days or several washes.

Water doesn't knock it off. It's the agitation of the washer and dryer that eventually degrade the coverage.

and make a gallon to soak all of your stuff in.
Have many of you used this particular product or a different one for a dip? I'm in the market for a good cheaper alternative to the Sawyer stuff, but the fact that most of the farm products don't mention fabric usage makes me worried there is extra crap in there which will hurt or discolor my gear.

I only use that on clothing, never important gear. I have read that a lot of people do use that one on gear since it doesn't have the petroleum stuff in it. Ymmv

So does that mean it will last even longer if we line dry? I'd love to see some evidence to that effect.

There's nothing wrong with being careful, but let's look at the facts. Permethrin is the active ingredient in Nix shampoo (lice shampoo) and is applied directly to the scalp. Permethrin is absorbed by the skin very slowly, in fact more slowly than the body can metabolize it. This would make it very hard for someone to die from Permethrin poisoning, at least unintentionally. Lastly, the epa lists permethrin very low on the insecticide toxicity level to humans, getting a non toxic, barely toxic rating.

It is toxic to cats and fish, however. So be careful around those pets or waterways.

Btw, Permethrin is based on synthesized crysanthemum seed oil.
