You are so right about that. I bought mine then said "I can make one of those" for my wife and a friend of mine. So I bought the climashield and fabric and went to work. My wife's turned out ....OK... and I am almost done with the friends. One thing I know if I was making them they would cost $300.00 (Don't get any ideas Paul). Any of AHE's gear is worth the price. I will stick to making hammocks. Oh, by the way, laying in my hammock now with my DIY PLUQ but a cold front is moving in so I may have to go get my New River lol.

I am sure price factors in for many folks. Never tracked that metric specificly. But the idea behind partials is to save weight and bulk in favor of the pad also making dual or triple use of the pad for leg insulation, sit pad at camp/rest breaks and possibly using a pad built into an UL pack as back support.

Some folks don't like to deal with the pad and if you tend to move more in your sleep then it might buy you. I tend to turn several time throughout the night and wake just enough to reposition the pad as needed. Does not wake me fully and I like to save the lack space for more food if I can.

LOL! Frankly, I start a LOT of DIY projects that end up just being a cost add-on for whatever I was trying to save money buying. Yes, sometimes I'm feeling pretty smug about a project--I've saved hundreds, no, THOUSANDS, doing DIY, but I'm developing a good feel for which ones will be successful. And this one sounds like a job for Paul! LOL!

I'll just second latriper that I'd spring for new river long if you're not counting grams. So much simpler and more comfortable than fiddling with a pad in addition to the quilt. May be a bit more money up front, but it's completely worth it. For the record, I own both and am 6'4".

Yeah, I move around a lot. That's how I know that there are benefits beyond warmth to switching to a UQ. I'm a warm sleeper and my Thermolite has never failed me in that department. But I wake up fully if I have to do much wrestling with gear. And I am ALWAYS wrestling with gear. Because my hammock, pad, and sleeping bag are apparently all coated in Teflon and it's like trying to stack marbles to keep them all lined up!
