That was my first thought! Squirrel pee or something!

Thick canopy = leaves out = too warm anyway. At least most of the time. I always camp in the pines, which always give at least a decent view.

That makes sense Mark. But regarding the pines, most, if not all campsites at provincial parks I've been in have very mature red & white pines and the canopy is pretty thick. Nice on the feet though, with all those generations of soft pine needles underfoot

Now that I have snakeskins, I might take a chance.

Got caught a couple of times hustling to put up a tarp in sudden night time showers. Being too blamed tired to get up unless I was convinced that yeah, here comes the rain, is no fun. It wasn't worth staying tense debating the issue with myself in the first place. Ultimately, I never slept soundly if I was worried about going topless.

Besides, after being in the great outdoors and the elements all day, hunkering down under a tarp is pretty sweet.

Thanks for all starting this dialog. Have read some interesting points. Not sure I am ready to go topless. Have experienced rain one too many times when the weather was supposed to be dry.

You are talking about "under quilt", right????

Went topless (tarp) and dang near bottomless (pants) with an UQ last Monday after four hard mountain climbing days on the AT in the Smokies.

    Best. Sleep. Ever.

I didn't care that there was a bear in the campsite (Birch Spring).
