I'm up for some northern WI hangin & fishin, but the 12+ hour round trip makes a weekend out of the question. More middle of the state could work, not sure where you have in mind but I'll start doing some research.

June or July dates might work, I'll have to check schedules at home. I do know there are 3 or 4 events the weekend of May 9.

If you like trout fishing the Wolf River in Langlade county is nice, just above the reservation.

Might be dispersed/primitive camping opportunities in the Nicolet National Forest nearby, I'll look into it.

Well who doesn't love hanging in Northern Wisconsin??!! Be flat out loco not to. Phenomenal scenery, tons of hiking, hunting, fishing, etc. And... plenty of trees too! Heck the real problem is narrowing down when and where. Grizzly Outdoors got us started with some "whens". Rex got me to thinking with his "where". (Thanks guys!) Thus I began checking out a large rectangle of countryside in Langlade county from Antigo up to Crandon, over to Laona and down Hwy 32 to Mountain, WI. Mainly focusing on a triangle of countryside from the town of Langlade (Hwy 55 & Hwy 64) south along Hwy 55 to Boulder Lake (Hwy 55 & Hwy WW) then northwest cross country to White Lake (Hwy 64 & Hwy M). Think I will call this triangle "Rex's Spot" from now on. :-)

Over the years I've stomped quite a lot of woods in a swath of countryside from Antigo to Rhinelander to Amberg to Crivitz while backpacking, day hiking, hunting, fishing, camping, etc. Haven't been to Rex's Spot yet. Next thing I knew my fingers were a typin' and my head was all a swirl with images from a multitude of maps.

The main goals as stated so far in this thread are hanging and fishing. To that I added a marked preference towards at least backpacking sites or better yet dispersed camping sites. Hiking trails are abundant thereabouts. Pretty much anywhere in Langlade county will provide plenty of great hiking.

For those not familiar with camping in WI, the DNR has a strong preference for keeping us in campgrounds. With a lil searching one can find some backpacking/kayaking/canoeing sites. These are much like those in the BWCA: cleared, somewhat level spot in the woods (in the northern 1/3 of WI it will typically be in medium to dense mixed conifer/hardwoods) with a fire ring. The other type of camping in WI is called "dispersed". That is where you hang wherever you want as long as you are at least one mile from your vehicle and 100 feet from the trail or water. There are many campgrounds within an hour or so drive of my home. Thus driving 3-4 hours each way for a campground holds little appeal for me. Dispersed camping on the other hand... Ah well, NOW you have my attention!!

Dispersed camping is dynamic. So many variables to consider, so many possible sites. Fun! However, being a group outing, people may prefer a static site. I'll propose a few of those as well. From what I have dug up so far, for dispersed we need to be along the IAT (Ice Age Trail). The IAT crosses Hwy 64 in Polar, WI (about 9 miles west of White Lake) then runs north up to Hwy 52. From there it travels NW to Peter's Marsh SWA and beyond. For backpacking sites we need to be in the Nicolet-Chequamegon NF which puts us east of Hwy 55.

    Sites near Rex's Spot

My preference when camping is to leave the vehicle Friday afternoon/evening and not see it again until Sunday afternoon. Trying to find backpacking or dispersed sites that accomplish that for everyone's consideration. I figure at some point we'll put up a poll and vote on the site so no harm in my "shotgun" approach of tossing out a bunch of possibilities. Maybe another poll to determine which weekend if there is no clear choice.

    Campground and Backpacking Site possibilities:

Overview of campgrounds in the Chequamegon-Nicolet NF:
    http://www.fs.usda.gov/recmain/cnnf/recreation
    p292 shows Langlade/Boulder Lake/White Lake Area Public Lands - aka Rex's Spot
    http://dnr.wi.gov/files/PDF/pubs/lf/LF0076_langlade.pdf

    Bagley Rapids
Nice sites, camp on the river. Rivers and lakes within walking distance.
    http://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/cnnf/...a/?recid=27925

Bear Lake - Nice looking sites with camping on the lake and two rivers within walking distance.
    http://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/cnnf/...a/?recid=27927

    Boulder Lake
Busy, popular campground with some dispersed sites nearby. This is the closest campground to "Rex's Spot". We can walk from here to the Wolf River. 1/3 of the sites in the campground are along Boulder Lake, which we can fish in. Half of the sites in the campground have electricity.

    Boot Lake
Nice sites, camp on the lake. Lakes and rivers within walking distance.

    Mary Lake
5 backpacking sites surrounding Fanny Lake with Mary Creek/Jones Spring nearby. This map also shows one backpacking site north of Boot Lake Campground.
    http://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_...rdb5330971.pdf

    Rose Lake
Perch Lake site looks nice. Jessie Lake site looks good too. In all, 3 dispersed sites each near lakes and rivers. http://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_...rdb5330980.pdf

    Temple Lake
The Mountain Lakes site looks nice. This is a backpacking site near two small lakes and the 2nd South Branch of the Oconto river.
    http://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_...rdb5330982.pdf

    Dispersed Site possibilities:

    Peter's Marsh SWA
(Hwy 45 north out of Antigo then northeast on Hwy A. From Peter's Marsh Hwy 52 is east, Hwy 64 is south.)
Dispersed camping but no idea about the fishing. There are a bunch of ponds and lakes near Hwy A that are good waterfowl ponds. Where there are waterfowl there are fish, so it might pan out.
    http://dnr.wi.gov/maps/WM/NOR/8212petersmarsh.pdf

The problem with combining dispersed camping with fishing is I am unaware of any sites in Langlade county that are great for both. Maybe up by the Bogus Swamp area. I camped in Peter's Marsh along the IAT years ago but never fished there. Fischer, Lawrence and Baker lakes are also along the IAT. Could easily fill a weekend between hiking and fishing from Peter's Marsh to Baker Lake or vice versa.
