    Hello from North Alabama

I've been lurking around here for a while.. Just registered the other day.

I grew up in Atlanta, GA. My buddy and I used to do a lot of hiking in North Georgia; Cohutta Wilderness, AT, etc. Back in the early/mid 80's I started using a hammock instead of a tent. My hammock was a cheap "fish net" looking thing but it did the job combined with a decent sleeping bag and a rain fly!

I've been away from hiking and hanging for a VERY long time, and MAN, things have come a long way. Found hammockforums when I was watching one of Shug Emery's videos (THANK'S SHUG!) doing some research. I am going to get back into backpacking again with the hopes of doing an AT thru hike when my daughter graduates H.S. (in 10 years.. lol). I am going to start getting her "trail trained" and hope that she enjoys it enough to want to try the thru hike as well. I am also going to try to get my wife into it also, but she is more of a city girl... so she may not take to it so much.

I was going to buy a hammock, but then found on here about doing a DIY, so I just ordered some materials and supplies to make my own! Heck, I may just try to make ALL of my own gear! It certainly is much cheaper (for a hammock, stuff sacks, etc.).

Thanks for all the info and advice!!

    Welcome from Decatur, AL!

There's a group hang coming up in Bankhead Forest on 24-26 April. There will be LOTS of different types of hammocks, tarps, quilts, and people that DIY.

    Here's the thread: https://www.hammockforums.net/forum/...ng-April-24-26

Welcome to the site! Best of luck with the DIY projects...I'm not as talented, and thus must pay the price.

That group hang sounds like fun! But I think we are already otherwise occupied Plus, I don't think I would have enough gear put together by that time.

I will definitely keep an eye peeled for future ones though!

    Thanks for the Welcome!

Leo, I was stationed in Maine (NAS Brunswick) in 1989. That was a cool place! I had planned on doing the south bound AT thru hike once my orders were up, but that never happened.

No worries.... It's actually car camping and we would probably either FIND you a hammock (people will bring extras) or may (*gasp*) allow a t**t if majority vote allows it. HAHA You can always just stop by and "talk hammocks" if you have a chance. We'll try to do it again in the fall.

Welcome from Gadsden. Don't let a lack of gear keep you away from the Sipsey Hang. Between us, I'm sure we can hang one more! We did it last year.
