    Uh-oh!!!

My fiance had to get surgery on her foot on Friday, and she's been sitting at home bored....

Yesterday she had me take her to Costco to buy some fancy sewing machine, and then to Hobby Lobby to buy some ripstop.

She's never used a sewing machine in her life before today, and she's already planning elaborate kitchen gear storage sacks, stuff sacks, stake sacks, blackbishop sacks (for an underquilt she doesn't actually have yet...) and who knows what else...

I'm gonna come home from work one day and she'll be lost in a pile of fabric, tangled up and unable to escape

Manna from heaven!! Let her have at it. More gear at low cost, engaged spouse, it is all good.

Here's hoping the surgery was not the foot she needs to power the machine!
Check AYCE's site for thorough instructions on sewing ripstop and stuff sacks. (thru-hiker.com ?) the DIY section here is also excellent, but best tips are somewhat scattered about.

So a little update - while sitting at home, she's learned a couple of seams and hems, and put them to work on some stake bags, generic stuff sacks, and the best creation....

A warbonnet-style blackbishop sack with draw cords on each end. She made it large enough that I can fit my heaviest winter bag plus the warbonnet blackbird plus the new Hangnout underquilt inside.

Since the sleeping bag is the largest item out of those three, if I leave the sleeping bag out, the bishop sack has enough space inside to use it as a long term storage sack for the UQ and blackbird without over-compressing the down. That's pretty dang cool, as it simplifies packing up for trips quite a lot. I like the idea of throwing the hammock in my backpack, getting to camp, pulling the thing out and having the quilt already in place. Really simplifies setup

So now that we've got more stuff sacks than gear to fill them, we're thinking about moving on to more elaborate stuff... specifically waterproof stuff.

If only we could find somewhere in Atlanta that actually carries silnylon in stock.
