    Tarp for the amazon

    Hello,

I am thinking about taking my Hennessy hyperlite hammock down to the Amazon. But I've only used it a few times up here, and never got rained on.

Is it a good idea to get a larger tarp, as this one is rather on the small side?

I will mostly be staying in one place for months, so I'm not sure if I want to invest in a cuben fiber one... but I may need a larger one as I will be in the rain forest?

    Thanks.

That sounds like a great trip. If it were me, I would get a big silnylon tarp and get something like the Warbonnet Bigmamajamba or the Superfly. It sounds like weight isn't an issue, so I wouldn't use cuben and it would be great to have a bigger porch for when you want to hang out in your hammock while those storms are coming in. Have a great trip.

I don't know what the conditions are like where you are planning to hang; if you will be hanging in (dense) forests, you shouldn't have a problem with rain blowing under your tarp. This means, a tarp with doors is probably not necessary - and since the temperatures and humidity will probably be on the high side, you want ventilation anyway. On the other hand, if it rains often, you'll probably appreciate a larger dry area. Sounds like a job for the WB Mamajamba. The Superfly would work, too, but my guess is, the doors would just be dead weight. Of course there are plenty of other tarp options with similar coverage.

I think this is a case of bigger is better. UGQ has some really nice large tarps as well, I think they even have a pole mod option. Either way, my experience in the Amazon would make me want a big tarp.
    Good luck,

    Thanks, guys!

I'm actually considering of making my own tarp

The pricing at this website seems very reasonable.

I need to order some other things anyway, and the fabric is so much cheaper, it seems like a very good idea. Anyone know if this fabric takes well to a sewing machine?

EDIT: ok never mind XD . after thinking on how to do it, it seems like way too much for a first project. Maybe I'll start with a double ended stuff sack first lol

My buddy spends 4 weeks a year volunteering in the Amazon.

Get the biggest tarp you are able. The Superfly is a good option since the doors will help when it's cold. If it's anything like my buddies trips, you'll get down to the high 30's some nights so the doors should help keep some heat in.

Also, the wider the tarp the further the splash zone from your rig.

    Sounds fun!
