When I was on the trail I’d start boiling water for coffee first thing then start munching on a pop tart or something. Drink the coffee and eat a second bar then resign myself to breaking down camp.

On the PCT I stopped even having coffee in the mornings; Or is mix it the night before and drink it cold with breakfast - not sure how that started but I hate breaking down in the morning. Worst part of the day for me

On a long hike I have also stopped making a hot coffee and hot breakfast in the morning. After my nighttime hot chocolate I put my oats and water in my GSI mug to cold soak overnight. In the morning I grab my mug, put one heaping tablespoon of vanilla protein powder in the mug and a little extra water.....delicious. Pack it all up. In 2 hours I take my baggy of 1 tablespoon of instant coffee 2 tablespoons of milk add it to my 20oz water bottle and in a little bit of hiking find a nice place to drink that and have a snack......delicious!
Zero extra fuel weight, nearly zero cleanup.

Yep. We started doing that in the Sierra when we’d wake up so early that any extra sleep was precious. Ppl started making their breakfast the night before - we called it gruel.

I remember watching my buddy Mainer on the AT filter water, pour a packet of oatmeal into it, then two instant coffees, give it a shake, say “****” to himself and start walking and drinking.

We called it the **** it breakfast

I am a fan of making the breakfast the night before. For me it was 1 carnation instant breakfast, 1 instant coffee, and mixed up in a 1L bottle. In the morning I just pour some cold water into the oatmeal packet and ate it before I started walking. I did this the whole PCT. I didn't really think it was that unpleasant but it definitely wasn't bacon and eggs and hot coffee. That was motivation to get to town.

Towards the end, actually probably starting in Oregon I would just eat a bar of some
Sort and get to it, then have extra snacks for second breakfast

How do you solve the volume problem? I have an HMG 3400 and after I put in 2 quilts, my WB blackbird, and a WB mountainfly tarp, there’s just not that much room left. The pack packs high and skinny and now stuff is at the back of my head. Carry the tarp on the outside of the pack?

This depends on what else you're carrying inside the pack.

It is good to look at gear lists from highly experienced LD hikers. Chop/Beardoh is one of my favorites to reference because his and SweetPea's lists for various regions are complete and 'seasoned' with tons of experience, backed up with thorough explanations of the rationale behind each and every gear choice.

In the end it boils down to stuff that's "nice to have" and gear that is "must have." Almost always, "nice to have" is the culprit when volume and weight are paramount concerns.

How about a PackNet on the outside of the pack? I put one on my Osprey 36L Stratus to hold additional gear.

The pack packs hi and skinny..
This was my problem with my MLD Exodus that I was using a few years ago for my winter treks. I felt like when I had it packed full.. It was hi up and like head level.. So I tried a GG Mariposa and for me, I felt like it packed a !little better with my gear. It does not ride as hi up when fully packed.
20180303_101050.jpg20190307_202903.jpg hard to tell from the pictures but one on left is MLD Exodus and in the other picture.. Pack in left is By Mariposa. Both are packed with same exact gear and amount of food.
