Probably because you're looking at the heavy PU coated ones. None of the cottage makers does PU coated tarps. You have to look at the HH silnylon tarps to compare.

HH Deep Jungle Rainfly 30D Silnylon: $79.95
HH Deep Jungle Rainfly 20D Silnylon: $89.95
WB Edge (which provides way more coverage than the HH diamond tarps): $85.00

HH Hex Rainfly 30D Silnylon: $139.95
WB Mamajamba (which is a lot larger!): $110.00

The silnylon HH Monsoon Rainfly and Typhoon Rainfly are more reasonably priced and cheaper than e.g. the WB Superfly - but they're also a lot smaller.

Bottom line: the higher quality tarps of the cottage vendors are cheaper...

Plus the cottage vendors are made here in the USA. I have a HH and love it but I'd go with a superfly or similar model from a cottage vendor.
