First hang in the rain & I got wet... Help!?

So I was sporting my Eno Doublenest and Eno Dryfly. Out of nowhere a huge thunderstorm with serious downpours came. All said and done, I was pretty pleased that I didn't wake up miserably soaked . This was my first hang in the rain and I turned out OK. I did get wet on the sides of the hammock a little. The Dryfly has a really particular pattern that almost curves in between anchor points (see picture) and that's where I got the most wet.

I am assuming I just might need a bigger tarp but is there something I was doing wrong? (ie: anchor points too close, tarp too high?)

When lying in the hammock the tarp ridge was about 2 feet from my face, everything was taught and my tarp attached to the tree about a foot below where my hammock did. Anyone that has used a Dryfly able to comment on its coverage compared to something like the WB Edge?

Any time the bottom of your hammock is hanging below the bottom edges of your tarp, or if the ends are open and very close to the hammock, side ways rain can be real tricky. I've always been amazed how many folks have been able to keep dry under those little HH diamond tarps. When ever I would hang under that and look around, I did not see how I could stay dry in other than straight down rain.
However, I some times think the easiest way to protect the low hanging parts is with some kind of Under Quilt Protector(UQP). Certainly for me, the under cover of the HHSS has proven bomb proof, even with that tiny tarp.

I found the dryfly's cat cuts to be be kind of pointless. If rigged low enough it can be adequate but if you want better coverage and lighter weight there are other options available.

You can hang dry with a smaller cat cut tarp but I know I have to make some accommodations.

    1) Site selection is very important. Try to get where you are hanging below a ridge, hill, mount, or heavy brush that will block the prevailing winds.
    2) Hang the tarp as low and close to you as possible. The closer it is to you when you are in the hammock the more lower protection you will have.
    3) UQP (under quilt protector). I don't leave home without it when I am using my HH stock tarp. While it won't stop a full on rain storm, it will make up for my stupidity if I don't do item 1 and 2 well. It also adds a bit of heat since it will block the wind.

We have several boys in our troop that have the ENO tarp and after the first rain storm they have all up graded. One guy keep moving it down to get the rain protection to the point he was on the ground. I think that the tarp was designed to keep the sun off you on nice sunny days.

My first tarp was the ENO Profly. It also had issues with weather protection even if it hung very close to the hammock. I upgraded to a larger tarp (and less weight) and haven't had a problem since. The ENO line is great for fair weather, not enough coverage for my liking in other than ideal conditions though.

I have and currently use the DryFly and yes, proper (read 'very specific') placement is critical with that tarp. Often times, I get everything set and lay in my hammock and can almost see out of the bottom of the tarp. My solution to the problem is going to visit HG and buy a tarp that rhymes with "Cuben Fiber."
