I can't find any example of someone using the side tie-outs on the kelty Noah with poles for a pole mod... I have the tarp but not the poles. I don't want to fail if someone has failed before me ... Anyone ever seen or heard?

I have used the side tie outs on the noah 12 with a hiking pole to the ground, but not with an over-the-tarp pole. This was the first time I set up the tarp - have gotten better at it since then. This worked really well to increase the space available under the tarp.
“The word hammockable (Meaning: two trees that are the perfect distance apart between which a hammock can be hung) is not in the dictionary, but it should be.”
Here's what I did. Works great.
76" between pull outs on the Kelty, so from Quest, I ordered:
- 12 X 13" .344 poles with inserts
- 2 X 13" .344 pole without inserts
- 4 end caps
- 182" or round up to 6 yards shock cord
To connect the poles/end caps to the tarp pull-outs, I used some very specialized adjustable straps made by Jared at Simply Light Designs for his pole mods. But you can use standard line like in the Superfly pole mod thread, such as a zing-it dogbone.
Though I've since switched to using a WB SF and WL OMR because of their pack size and weight advantages, opening up the Kelty Noah 12 with poles makes it crazy big inside. Much bigger feeling than the more "standard" hammock winter tarps.
I wonder the noticeable difference between a pole mod vs just pulling out to a hiking pole or stick or tree or whatnot, I. E. How much is out vs. up?
For me, the reason I choose poles is about having less lines around the campsite, especially at 3 am. :-)
But you do have some flexibility, with and without the poles, of where you tie down the tarp sides. In colder weather, I tend to hang the tarp lower, closer to the hammock, and tie the tarp's bottom side tie outs almost straight down to the ground. In warmer weather, I'll angle the tarp sides outward more, because I'm not as concerned about wind and retaining heat.
im sure this is an option.... http://dutchwaregear.com/clip-on-tarp-pull-outs.html
