    New hanger in SF

    Hi all

Due to group camp / moto rides, I've gotten back into camping after a long hiatus. Using the moto-as-transportation as an excuse to pack smaller (and get new toys!), I got a hammock. Without an excessive amount of research, I went with Hennessy (Explorer Deluxe) for their all-in-one approach (came really close to getting ENO stuff, since it was readily available at REI - so glad I didn't). Of course, in all my ground-sleeping ignorance, my first hang last November in Red Bluff in the 40s was miserable (such a comfy lay, but so cold). I do wish I'd known about CBS before discovering it first-hand. Ok, so now to get warm. I set my sights on some quilts - HG, or maybe AHE for cost. My wife, with great intentions, gifted me a SuperShelter and double bubble pad. The SS was great in the back yard to 50 (haven't tried the bubble pad, yet - saving that for 911 backup, if ever needed), and I'm pretty sure it could go into the 40s and further. But such a PITA. I really liked the idea of the undercover, but meh at the pad and space blanket approach. I made a fleece blanket into an underquilt, and again, good to 50 in the back yard with just that and the undercover, but not into the thought of having to use the space blanket for anything cooler than that. Finally got a Potomac and Owyhee set from AHE. So far, so nice. Great in the backyard, and just last week had another group ride / camp near Clear Lake. Got to 40 (36 with wind), and was comfortable. I expected "toasty" (on the bottom) since the gear is supposed to be good to 25/30 and I sleep warm, but I was just "not cold". My initial guess is that the UQ was hung too tight and compressed a bit. I won't be able to re-test until mid-April - I'm seriously debating the Boggs group hang. So two weekends hanging in the wild, and several nights in the back yard since November.

    My current setup:
    HH Explorer Deluxe
    Rings/Biners/AtlasXL
HH SS (will most likely not get used much)
    AHE 3S Potomac and Owyhee
HH Typhoon (haven't tested the doors yet)
Snugpak Jungle Blanket (for summer quilt or winter overcover)
    Snakeskins and SLUG
Forever waiting for my 2QZQ UQP to get here

Working on getting for the wife:
    HH Expedition
    DD underblanket and top quilt

Can't wait for more hangs away from home!

*quick wave at OK, and another across the Bay!

And just when I thought I was satisfied with what I have, I discover the DH Thunderbird. How glorious. Starting to think the wife is gonna get the Explorer...
